New Entrant

A new entrant is an individual wishing to achieve a recognised industry qualification to undertake gas work and gain “Gas Safe Registration” in that work category. This individual could be entering the industry via a vocational qualification or a managed learning programme (MLP) route. This definition will also apply and includes individuals who have completed and hold qualifications recognised as Category 2 recorded on GN8 Appendix 1.

Extension to Range

This phrase is defined as remaining within the sector but adding additional range to existing competencies. Extending range relates to gas safe registered engineers that have a minimum of six months experience who desire to extend an existing range of appliances. Typical examples include a Domestic Central Heating Engineer who is holding CCN1 and CENWAT and desires to extend his/her existing competency to include HTR1, DAH1 & CKR1.

Another example is the Non-Domestic Engineer who holds COCN1 and CIGA1 and desired to extend his/her existing competency to include CORT1.

Extension to Scope

This phrase is defined as moving from one sector to another. Moving sector relates to gas safe registered engineers that have a minimum of six months experience who desire to extend an existing scope, examples include, Domestic to Non-Domestic, Non-Domestic to Domestic, Domestic to LPG, ESP & Meter Installer to Domestic and so on. Once the “Core” sector extension has been completed and attained the range extensions of that new sector can be undertaken.

An example of this is an engineer extending his/ her scope from Domestic Natural Gas to LPG (CoNGLP1) can now “Range Extend” to HTRLP2.

MLP

Managed Learning Programmes (MLPs) are approved by the “Authoriser of Training” (IGEM) in accordance with the requirements of IGEM/IG/1. “Standards of Training in Safe Gas Work” (IGEM/IG/1) was introduced by the industry to standardise the methodology of training for new entrants and went live on the 1st October 2017.

Managed Learning Programmes not in accordance with IGEM/IG/1 are no longer recognised as an entry route for a new learner from the 1st October 2018. Any old MLP must have been commenced before 1st October 2017 and completed and verified before the 1st October 2018.

Candidate Categories

Category 1

Applicants who are experienced gas-fitting operatives who hold ACS, ACoPs, S/NVQ or City & Guilds Gas Qualifications and who are either seeking:

Category 1

  • Initial ACS Assessment

  • Re-Assessment on Initial ACS Assessment

  • Extension of Certification to Include Additional Work Range

Note: Pre-requisite training is required for extension of additional work range.

Category 2

Application conditions require that this applicant obtains employment with a gas registered business that is willing to provide an extended period of company “in-house” gas training and organisational support prior to taking the ACS assessment.

Applicants must provide evidence that they hold qualifications demonstrating competence in work activities associated with fossil fuelled appliances, equipment, and/ or pipe work installation.

Examples of appropriate qualifications include:

Category 2

  • Plumbing Craft Qualification or S/NVQ

  • Pipe Fitter/ Welder Craft Qualification or S/NVQ

  • Heating and Ventilating Craft Qualification or S/NVQ

  • Refrigeration Engineer Craft Qualification or S/NVQ

Category 3

Category 3 applicants are new entrants to the gas industry and have no relevant qualifications or experience.

Application conditions require that this applicant obtains employment with a gas registered business that is willing to provide an auditable extended period of company “in-house” gas training and organisational support prior to taking the ACS assessment. (The alternative route for this category of applicant is to seek training and experience that will result in the attainment of an N/SVQ in Gas Services Installation and Maintenance at level II or III)

A number of approved centres operate training programmes (e.g. Brocks Training Centre) that may be suitable to support a Category 2 or Category 3 applicant. The duration and content of the training programme will be determined by the scope of gas work to be undertaken. Evidence in the form of a portfolio of the completion of such training must be presented to a Certification Body, which will issue a Certificate of Training (when sufficient evidence is available). This Certificate of Training can be presented to an Assessment Centre, prior to the operative taking ACS assessments.

Alternatively an N/SVQ within the Mechanical Engineering Sector with related ‘on the job’ gas training and experience in the intended areas of gas work to be carried out will also support a future application.

Managed Learning Programme

We offer Domestic Gas Training for Category 2 and New Entrant candidates in the form of a Managed Learning Programme (MLP). These courses are offered over a period of training to satisfy 280 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) which is set in accordance with ‘IGEM/IG/1 Standards of Training in Safe Gas Work’.

On-site evidence must be provided for scope of work required.

Scope of gas work for full scope includes: CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1 and HTR1.
